The type of surgical intervention depends on factors like the severity of the condition and the location where retinal detachment has occurred.

Here are the main treatment options:

Pneumatic Retinopexy

A gas bubble is pushed inside your eye. This bubble further pushes the retina back into its proper place, allowing it to heal. After this procedure, you are supposed to keep your head in a particular position for a few days so that the bubble stays in the correct place. Your eye doctor will instruct you regarding your head position. As healing progresses, your body starts producing the eye fluid, which then replaces the gas bubble. It is a quick outpatient procedure.

Vitrectomy

The vitreous that pulled on the retina causing its detachment, is removed. In its place, your eyecare provider will put a gas, air, or oil bubble, which pushes the retina back into its original position. This helps the retina to heal. In case, an oil bubble is used, it will have to be removed in a few months. If treated with an air or gas bubble, there will be restrictions like not travelling by air, going to high altitudes, or enjoying underwater activities.

Scleral Buckle

In this procedure, your ophthalmologist will sew a band of soft plastic or alternatively rubber on the white part (sclera) of your eyeball. This band gently presses the eye inwards – closer to the detached retina, helping it to reattach and heal. The scleral buckle is not visible, and typically remains on the eye for good.

*Note: Vision may take some months to improve. Some patients may also require another surgery. And some patients may get back only part of their lost vision.
