Can I Ice My Eyes After LASIK?

Can I Ice My Eyes After LASIK

Like any other surgery, a little inflammation or puffiness after LASIK eye surgery is common and normal. Naturally, you may think icing or cold compresses may help bring the puffiness down. But is icing after LASIK safe?

The short answer is, yes – gentle cold compression on closed eyelids (only after 24 hours post-surgery) is a safe and effective way of relieving symptoms like discomfort and puffiness. However, it’s important to keep certain factors like your surgeon’s clearance, the right cold compress technique, etc., in mind.

In this blog, we are going to cover everything you need to be mindful of while icing your eyes after LASIK.

Icing After LASIK: When & How to Do It

The initial 24-hour window

24 hours after your LASIK eye surgery, the corneal flap (if you choose a flap-based procedure) is at its most vulnerable state in the post-surgery healing process.

Absolutely NO cold compresses (not even soft or gentle ones) must be applied during this time. Only once your next-day follow-up confirms on-track corneal healing, can you start with cold compresses.

👉 REMEMBER THESE IMPORTANT STEPS WHEN ICING:

– Wait 24 hours (minimum) & only perform cold compression after clearing it with your LASIK surgeon
– Wash your hands before touching the area near your eyes
– Refrigerate a soft gel eye mask for 20-30 minutes
– Lie down and close your eyes
– Gently rest the soft gel ice mask on your closed eyelids (don’t apply pressure)
– Keep the ice pack on your eyelids for about 10-15 minutes
– Remove the eye mask gently, without sliding on or rubbing the eyelid area
– Apply your prescribed eye drops
– Repeat 2-3 times every day
– Stop once the swelling and puffiness resolve (typically in 5-7 days)

What to Use Vs What to Avoid

Here is a concise list of things you can use for icing after LASIK eye surgery:

SAFEUNSAFE
Soft gel ice mask for eyes
(refrigerated, not frozen)
Unwrapped hard ice cubes
(harsh, cold & uneven pressure)
Clean cloth soaked and wrung out in clean, cold tap waterFrozen gel packs for sports injuries
(too hard & too cold)
Plain & unused tea bags
(cooled in refrigerator)
Frozen vegetable packs
(uneven surface & extremely cold for healing eyes)

Unsure if the ice pack is too cold for your eyes? If the ice pack feels too cold against the back of your hand, it’s too cold for your post-op eyes. Remember to aim for a “cool” compress, not “frozen” – generally 4-10°C.

What Does a Cold Compress After LASIK Help With?

YESNO
Puffiness around the eyesPost-surgery temporary dryness
(only lubricating drops help)
Mild tenderness around the brow/socket areaBlurry vision
Headache from recovery-related inflammationAs a replacement for prescribed anti-inflammatory/antibiotic drops
General post-op discomfort in the initial 48-72 hoursHealing speed of the corneal flap

When to Visit a Doctor?

Some grittiness and puffiness in the first 48 hours are completely normal. But if you notice any of the following symptoms, call your surgeon immediately:

  • Persistent or increasing eye pain
  • Worsening eyelid swelling after 48 hours
  • Sudden decline in vision that doesn’t get better with lubricating eye drop use
  • Eye redness & discharge
  • A sensation of something having “shifted” or “moved” inside the eye

Conclusion

A cold compress is an effective way of getting relief from eye puffiness and mild discomfort after LASIK eye surgery. If you use the right gentle product, don’t apply any pressure, and rest the cold compress on your closed eyelids for 10-15 minutes, you will have made your recovery process much more comfortable.

It is important to remember that icing your eyes after LASIK does not promote faster corneal healing or act as a solution for dry eye.

Your eye drop routine, protective eyewear, and follow-up appointments make a big impact when it comes to faster corneal healing and visual outcomes. For more information on LASIK and post-LASIK care, contact our representatives at +91 87250-01333.
