Mohali, Mar 12, 2026:
Sohana Hospital organised a Glaucoma Awareness Walk in Mohali on Thursday. The walk was held under the leadership of Dr. Amanpreet Kaur, COO & Senior Cataract and Refractive Surgeon, as part of the ongoing Glaucoma Awareness Week being observed from March 8 to 14, 2026.
This awareness walk was aimed at educating people about the importance of early detection and regular eye check-ups to prevent irreversible vision loss caused by this “silent thief of sight”. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from doctors, hospital staff, patients, and local residents who came together to spread the message – “Early glaucoma detection is the best prevention.”
Participants carried placards and banners highlighting the importance of regular eye screenings, especially for individuals aged 40 and above, those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of glaucoma.
Addressing the participants on the occasion, Dr. Amanpreet Kaur emphasised the urgent need for public awareness regarding glaucoma. “Despite advancements in eye care treatments, glaucoma (kala motia) affects nearly 80 million people across the world, and almost half of them lack awareness that they have the disease. It is particularly important in the Indian context since one in every eight Indians either has glaucoma or is at risk of developing it,” said Dr. Amanpreet Kaur.
“The most concerning aspect of glaucoma is that it usually develops without pain or early warning signs. This is why regular eye examinations are absolutely essential for early diagnosis and timely treatment.” She further highlighted that with modern diagnostic technologies and timely intervention, glaucoma can be effectively managed and vision loss can be prevented in most cases.
“At Sohana Hospital, we are committed to spreading awareness and encouraging people to prioritise preventive eye care. A simple eye check-up can save your sight. Through this awareness walk and free eye pressure (IOP) check-up throughout the glaucoma awareness week (8-14 March, 2026), we aim to save people from losing their vision to glaucoma,” she added.
During the event, doctors also interacted with participants and answered their queries regarding the symptoms, risk factors, and treatment options for glaucoma. With this awareness campaign and other initiatives, Sohana Hospital reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vision and promoting eye health through community outreach, education, and advanced ophthalmic care.
