Can I Go Home Alone After LASIK?

Can I Go Home Alone After LASIK

The short answer – No, you cannot go home alone immediately after LASIK eye surgery. This is a standard post-op instruction any LASIK surgeon will give you. Why is that? It essentially comes down to 2 reasons: blurred vision immediately after surgery and protective eyewear that may limit your side vision.

Now, these factors are not permanent and clear up within a few hours. But they are exactly why it becomes crucial to have someone accompanying you during the immediate post-op window.

This blog outlines what the immediate post-op window really entails, how fast the vision stabilises, and all the things you need to keep in mind to get home safely after your surgery.

Why Can’t You Drive Home After LASIK?

First things first, let’s talk about why you should not be driving or travelling alone after LASIK eye surgery. Here are the 2 factors:

  • Fluctuating or blurred vision: Immediately after your surgery, your vision may still be a little blurry (temporarily) as the healing has not begun yet. This makes it challenging to climb stairs and navigate traffic or unfamiliar environments without assistance.
  • Protective eyewear: Once your procedure is done, you will be made to wear protective eyewear to avoid accidental eye rubbing. As a result of these eyeglasses, your peripheral vision is compromised, which can make walking, travelling, or driving alone a hazard.

→ This is why, in order to get home safely, your surgeon will always advise you to have a loved one accompany you on the day of the surgery or at least arrange for a ride back home well in advance.

Vision Stabilisation Timeline

The above-mentioned restrictions are not indefinite – vision stabilisation happens fast, just not immediately after the surgery. Your vision may look a little like this:

  • Fluctuating or blurred vision – Immediately post-op
  • Vision starts clearing up – In 24 hours
  • Follow-up visit confirms whether you meet standard vision required for driving or not – Day 1 follow-up visit

Plan of Action for the Drive Home After LASIK

Here are a few things to keep in mind while you plan your drive back home on the day of the surgery:

  • Arrange in advance: Ask a family member or friend to accompany you and drive you home. Alternatively, you can also schedule a pre-booked cab to pick you up after your surgery.
  • Plan for 2 trips to the hospital: Don’t just plan for rides on the surgery day, but also for the follow-up visit the next day.
  • Pack sunglasses for the ride: Light sensitivity is common in the initial hours after LASIK surgery. You may need to use sunglasses to protect your eyes from the direct sunlight.
  • Wear your protective eyewear as instructed by the surgeon: Wear your protective eyewear for the initial post-op window.

Day 1 Follow-Up After LASIK

You might be wondering why we mentioned that you need to schedule a ride for the next-day follow-up visit, too. Well, depending on how stable your vision is, you may or may not be able to drive yourself to the doctor’s office. This is why most surgeons suggest you stay off driving or travelling alone.

After monitoring your progress in the 1st follow-up, though, your surgeon will tell you if you can get back to driving or not. Many patients can recover enough to get back to routine tasks like driving, using public transport, etc. However, you do need to be mindful and wear protective eyewear during the initial post-op days and follow your prescribed eye routine for progressively faster and more comfortable healing.
